Kick-Off Meeting on Erasmus Strategic IP Management for Effective R&I in Asian Higher Education (SPIRE)

CIC recently participated in the Erasmus SPIRE Kick-Off Meeting at UTM, KL from 11 May to 12 May 2017.

The specific objectives of this SPIRE programme are as follows:

i. To strengthen knowledge and skills of personnel of the Southeast Asian HEIs for the implementation of consistent IP protocols and policies, as well as for the provision of comprehensive IP services at the institutional and local levels.

ii. To establish IP Management Units (IPMUs) at the Southeast Asian HEIs as centralised services for providing IP related assistance to the universities' communities and local businesses.

iii. To set up a Regional IP Network amongst the PCUs, as a specialised forum of professionals to pool IP related resources and foster national and regional debate.

Participating Universities:

i. Partners from EU: Agora Institute for Management Technology (Spain), University of Turku (Finland), Universitat di Bologna (Italy) and Masaryk University (Czech Republic).

ii. Partners from Malaysia: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (coordinator), Multimedia University

iii. Partners from Thailand: Chulalongkorn University, Burapha University

iv. Partners from Indonesia: Syiah Kuala University, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember

v. Partners from Philippines: University of Philippines System, Mindanao State University

During the 2-day workshop, representative of each university shared about their IP Unit background and establishment, including the background of their innovation ecosystem, success stories, challenges faced, some statistics, etc.

The SPIRE project which will run for 3 years starting 2017 is expected to strengthen/enhance the existing IP unit via utilizing the programme’s established networking and collaboration.

Next activity under this programme would be:

i. Collecting needs analysis from Asian partners; and

ii. A study visit to Masaryk University and University of Bologna
